Teaching Data Science

Success in data science and statistics is dependent on the development of both analytical and computational skills. As statistics educators we are more familiar and comfortable with teaching the former, but the latter is becoming increasingly important. The goal of this workshop is to equip educators with concrete information on content and infrastructure for painlessly introducing modern computation into a data science and/or statistics curriculum. In addition to gaining technical knowledge, participants will engage in discussion around the decisions that go into choosing infrastructure and developing curriculum. Workshop attendees will work through several exercises from existing courses and get first-hand experience with using relevant tool-chains and techniques, including R/RStudio, literate programming with R Markdown, and collaboration, version control, and automated feedback with Git/GitHub. We will also discuss best practices for configuring and deploying classroom infrastructures to support these tools. This workshop is aimed at participants who are interested in the role of computing in either a Statistics or Data Science curriculum, including faculty designing new courses/programs and those interested in adding or improving a computational component to an existing course. A basic knowledge of R is assumed and familiarity with Git is preferred.

Fast and Scalable Machine Learning with H20

This workshop will provide an in-depth, hands-on, introduction to the H2O machine learning library in R. H2O is an open source, distributed machine learning platform designed for speed and scalability. The core machine learning algorithms of H2O are implemented in high-performance Java, however, fully-featured APIs are available in R, Python, Scala, and also through a web interface. Since H2O’s algorithm implementations are distributed, this allows the software to scale to very large datasets that may not fit into RAM on a single machine. H2O currently features distributed implementations of Generalized Linear Models, Gradient Boosting Machines, Random Forest, Deep Neural Nets, Stacked Ensembles (aka “Super Learners”), dimensionality reduction methods (PCA, GLRM), clustering algorithms (K-means), anomaly detection methods, among others as well as a fully automated machine learning algorithm (“AutoML”).
Topics covered in the workshop include: training and tuning machine learning algorithms (supervised and unsupervised), cross-validation, prediction, model evaluation, grid search as well as a special section on deep learning. We will also provide tips for encoding high-cardinality categorical features and text data. The workshop will end with a tutorial on the “AutoML” algorithm in H2O, which provides a fully automated algorithm for supervised learning.

En este taller revisaremos la importancia de la visualización, aprenderemos de elementos técnicos como tipos de gráficos, correcto uso de colores, etiquetas y otros elementos; además de revisar buenas prácticas a considerar al momento de realizar una visualización. Luego, con R aprenderemos a realizar simples, interactivos y efectivos gráficos usando solo la función hchart, para después estudiar las funciones para configurar cada elemento del gráfico tales como los ejes, títulos, tooltips. Aprenderemos a graficar datos provenientes data.frames y otras fuentes de información, como datos espaciales. Finalizaremos aprendiendo cómo es como es la integración de highcharter con los paquetes Shiny y RMarkdown.

Package Development

The key to well-documented, well-tested and easily-distributed R code is the package. This half day class will teach you how to make package development as easy as possible with devtools and usethis. You’ll also learn roxygen2 to document your code so others (including future you!) can understand what’s going on, and testthat to avoid future breakages. The class will consist of a series of demonstrations and hands on exercises.

Participants should bring a laptop setup to build R packages. Detailed instructions are available here.

Diversity Scholarships LatinR2019

Thanks to the support of our sponsors, in this edition of LatinR we will be able to offer assistance scholarships that seek to encourage the participation of less represented groups. Scholarships include:

the conference ticket for the 26th and 27th of September
registration for two of the tutorials on Wednesday 25 September
depending on the case, an economic contribution of between 200 and 400 USD for transportation and/or accommodation for those coming from outside Santiago. We know that in many cases this amount is not enough to cover the entire trip, but it can help cushion the expense.

The application is made through this link: bit.ly/becas-latinr2019. The form will be open until Monday, August 5 at 3:00 p.m., Chilean Continental Time (UTC - 4:00 a.m.). The results will be published on Monday 12 August.

Scholarship recipients will receive an electronic transfer once the event is over. It will be necessary to provide proof of travel (ticket, accommodation, etc.) in order to make the reimbursement.

Scholarships will be allocated considering criteria of need, diversity and possibility of impact.

LatinR2019 <- Latin American Conference about the Use of R in Research + Development

After the first version in Buenos Aires in 2018, LatinR will continue visiting the continent in 2019. This year, the second instance of the conference will take place in Santiago de Chile between September 25 and 27. As with last year, the first day will be taken up with workshops and the las two, the conference proper.

Presentation guidelines

Oral communications

Communications about research results, progress reports, or specific developments that, because their originality or potential applications in the use or development of R in academia or industry, is of interest to the regional community of R users. Presenters will have 15 minutes + 5 minutes for Q&A.

Submissions must include a summary of no more than two pages including text, tables and figures. For the case of projects including Shiny applications or other interactive formats, they must also include the URL in which the application is available.

Posters

Posters allow researchers and professionals to present and discuss their latest advances, ideas, ongoing research, and experiences or challenges related to the topics of interest of LatinR.

Submissions must include a summary of no more than two pages including text, tables and figures.

Round tables

Round tables bring together researchers and professionals to present different viewpoints about a common topic. Proposals must consider one moderator and between 3 and 4 presenters.

The format will be as follows. First, a five minute introductory presentation by the moderator. Since LatinR gathers people from a great variety of disciplines, this introduction is meant to familiarise the audience with the particular topic of the round table. It should also explicitly state the connection of each presenter to the topic. Then, each presenter will have a maximum of 15 minutes. At the end, there will be 15 minutes for Q&A with the audience.

We are particularly interested in lineups that include presenters from diverse backgrounds (different institutions, countries, areas of research, gender, etc…) and show different methodologies and approaches to the subject.

Submissions must include:

a general description of the round table with 150 word limit.
a summary of each presentation with a one page limit including text, tables and figures.

Submission guidelines

The official languages of the conference are Spanish, Portuguese and English. Abstracts must be written in the same language of the oral presentation or poster.
Submissions must be sent in PDF format without author name or institution through the EasyChair platform following this link from March 15 to April 30.
Submissions must be prepared in Arial 11, single-spaced letter size.
For round tables, presentation summaries must be included in the same file.
Each submission will be carefully evaluated by out Scientific Committee (announcement forthcoming) regarding their originality, contribution, technical qualities and clarity.

Registration

At least one author from each oral communication, poster or round table presentation must be registered for participating in the conference.
